Congratulations on your engagement!

We know that this is an exciting moment in your lives as you embark on a life-long commitment to each other.  Remember that marriage in the Catholic Church is a sacrament of great importance.  "The Sacrament of Marriage is a covenant, which is more than a contract ... The marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. The celebration of marriage is also a liturgical act...Catholics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy." (from the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults ).

To qualify for having your wedding at St. Peter's, one of you must have a history with the parish by either being a registered parishioner in residence, or having grown up in the parish.  If the bride is not a member of St. Peter of Alcantara Church, she must get a letter from her pastor permitting her to be married here.

Planning ahead is key.  Arrangements should be made with us at least 6 months in advance of your proposed wedding date.  We cannot promise you a date until both of you have met with the pastor for a pre-nuptial interview.

To start things off you would need to fill out a one page application, available here and at the rectory.  This may be returned in the mail to our address at 1327 Port Washington Blvd., Port Washington, NY 11050  Attn: Susan, or can be e-mailed to This email address is being protected from spambots. The wedding packet, which contains the wedding guide can be obtained at the rectory.  The guide may also be downloaded here.  This should answer most of your questions and help you with your planning.

Pre-Cana is not currently offered at St. Peter's.  However there are many resources on line.  Google "Pre-Cana" and you will find many options.  For in-person classes, the Diocese of Rockville Centre (drvc.org) offers marriage preparation that can be done in one weekend.  Or, you may explore engagedencounterli.org.

Here is a check list of the paperwork you will need to submit to the rectory before your wedding.  These are required by the Catholic Church.

  • New Baptismal Certificate.  This cannot be dated more than 6 months before your proposed wedding date.  Simply call the church where you were baptized, and a new one will be sent to you.  This is a routine procedure at all Catholic rectories.
  • Marriage License.  Get this up to 6 weeks before your wedding.  ***Even if you have already been legally married in a civil ceremony, you still need to obtain a license for a religious ceremony.
  • Wedding Fee.  $650.00. This includes the use of the Church, priest, organist and cantor.  Our Music Director Rob Bobek will answer any questions you have about the music and alternate performers.  He can be reached at 516-967-4710.
  • Certificate of completion from Pre-Cana.
  • Worksheet of your readings and vows.  You will be introduced to this during Pre-Cana.
